The BMW 1 Series may have undergone a very slight refresh for the 2012 model year, but it appears that engineers are already hard at work for the next-generation of BMW's current entry-level machine. Here, we see a five-door hatchback version out testing in the snow-laden cold, complete with a set of chains on its rear tires.

Though it appears that the size of the 1 Series hasn't changed much, we can see that the front fascia has been slightly redesigned, probably taking on a shape more akin to what's been done to the larger 5 Series sedan. This prototype is still pretty heavily camouflaged, so it's hard to tell exactly what design tweaks are in store.

As for what's under the hood, your guess is as good as ours. However, BMW's latest commitment to four-cylinder turbocharged engines leads us to believe that the base car will have four-pot power, while the top-end 135i will still likely use the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that we currently enjoy.

Jeep Grand Cherokee bests Toyota 4Runner 2011

  • 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee2010 Toyota 4Runner

Consumer Reports, bastions of a straightforward, no-frills automotive testing regime focused on the consumer, compares in its December 2010 issue the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 2010 Toyota 4Runner, both of which were completely redesigned within the last several months. Interestingly - and despite the fact that the Jeep has not yet had enough time to set a reliability score - the testers at CR have seen enough from the Grand Cherokee to vault it over its rival from Toyota, which scored too low to recommend.

The magazine praises the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee for its comfortable on-road ride and quiet interior while heaping discontent on the 4Runner in the exact same categories. When it comes to prowess off the beaten path, Toyota’s body-on-frame ’ute regains some ground, though CR is quick to point out that the Jeep handles the rough stuff equally well when equipped with the right options, such as low-range gearing and the available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system with its height-adjustable suspension.

Also drawing ire from CR’s testers is the Toyota 4Runner’s interior with "leather seats [that] look like vinyl," "cheap-looking plastics." The 4Runner was also lacking some notable features one would expect at its $37,425 asking price. Want to read more from CR regarding its comparison of two classic sport utility vehicles? Click past the break, or wait for the full report in the December 2010 issue.

Report: Audi bringing plug-in hybrid in 2014

  • Unknown
  • Audi e-tron concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

By the year 2020, Audi hopes to be the "leading premium seller of electric vehicles," Franciscus van Meel, the automaker’s manager for electric mobility, told AutoWeek during a recent technical workshop at the company’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. In addition to launching a number of hybrid vehicles (including the A8 and Q5) over the next few years, Audi plans to debut a plug-in hybrid in 2014.

Exactly what sort of plug-in hybrid we’ll actually see hasn’t been disclosed just yet, but the whole business is part of Audi’s e-tron division – the folks that gave us beauties like the R8-based e-tron supercar (pictured above) that debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Furthermore, Audi’s board member for technology, Michael Dick, says that by 2020, he wants to see the automaker’s internal combustion engines improve efficiency by 30 percent, with 5 percent of the brand’s lineup to be purely electric. That’s a tall order, indeed, but with parent company Volkswagen AG aiming to be the number one producer of hybrid and electric cars before the end of the next decade, the four-ringed automaker’s quest for electrification isn’t as far-fetched as you might think.

Top Gear USA - the first episode

  • /Not The Original, But Not Bad, Either
    /
Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood
The logo. The exotic car-filled studio. The engine block coffee table.
The Stig. The Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. It all seemed so
familiar. The inaugural episode of /Top Gear USA /aired Sunday night at
10pm EST/9C on the History Channel with a lot of what made the original
British show an international hit, but without those three dynamic
blokes that have made the UK version so great. Or the amazing producers
who put that show together each week. Instead, we get new producers, a
new set, and new promise in hosts Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and
    Rutledge Wood.
The first episode of /Top Gear USA/ started off with a bang by
transitioning from an original Shelby Cobra to the best modern
interpretation of the big engine on wheels: the Dodge Viper
    <http://www.autoblog.com/model/viper+srt10>. The American-made missile
was driven by Tanner Foust who was charged with outrunning a Cobra
attack helicopter. The Viper was fitted with a missile detection
simulator that showed when the supercar was being missile-locked and
"hit" by the chopper. To win this competition, Foust and his
navigator/co-host Rutledge Wood needed to blast across town and back
before being hit by the chopper three times. We won't tell you how it
ends, but we will say this first stunt showed that while the camera work
and editing isn't yet up to /Top Gear UK/ levels of excellence, the
content is still engaging and fun to watch.

First Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

  • Clark Griswold Should Have Waited

Instead of getting suckered into the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, a pea green calamity with excessive wood paneling and eight sealed-beam headlamps, a wiser move for Clark Griswold would have been to hold off until the first wave of high-performance station wagons rolled into showrooms. As it happened, just a few years after Clark traded in his Oldsmobile, sedans like the Volvo 740 and BMW E34 spawned the enthusiast-targeted Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon and BMW M5 Touring. Both five-doors would have given Christy Brinkley a serious run in her red Ferrari 308 GTSi.Those early gussied-up family haulers were the predecessors to the Audi RS6 Avant, Dodge SRT8 Wagon, BMW M5 Touring and Mercedes-Benz E63 Sport Wagon. None were intended to be volume models (in fact, two never made it to the States). Instead, each was fabricated to act as a flagship ambassador, a proof-of-concept to the performance capability of the five-door chassis and to deliver unchallenged bragging rights. Automakers didn't build fast wagons because they had to - they built them because they could.

Cadillac, a company no longer content with letting others lead segments it once dominated, wanted to get into the frothy action. The luxury automaker felt an obligation to do "the right thing" and push for its own very unique five-door. The vision was clear - Cadillac wanted to build a CTS-V Wagon - and the concept was simple, making it difficult for management to contest (at the time, the organization was functioning inside circled-wagons). Since the platform and powertrain were already in existence, the ceremonial mating would be accomplished at minimal cost and everything could be completed at breakneck speed. Less than one year later, the all-new CTS-V Wagon is here.
